Explanation of Wiring Methods for Cable Identification Instrument: Direct Connection and Coupling Method

Cable Identification Instrument plays an important role in cable construction and maintenance work. It consists of three parts: a signal generator, a receiving clamp, and a signal detector. The signal generator mainly produces a special pulse-modulated signal, which is applied to the tested cable that has been taken out of service through the output line. The receiving clamp is used on site to locate the tested cable. When the receiving clamp detector detects the special signal applied to the cable, the meter pointer on the signal detector swings synchronously with the frequency of the applied signal, while the signals detected on other cables are much smaller and in the opposite direction. By observing the amplitude and direction indicated by the meter, the tested cable can be easily determined. When the receiving clamp and signal detector are used together with the signal generator, they can be used for judging the live status of cables or assisting in locating short-circuit positions in cables. When using the receiving clamp, the clamp jaws should be clamped onto the cable.

Currently, there are instruments on the market for identifying both de-energized and energized cables. However, in actual use, cables at the site are often placed overlapping each other, and the clamps used by the instruments often cannot clamp onto them, making identification impossible. Moreover, most identification receiving parts still use pointer meters for indication, which are prone to failure due to vibration on site. Additionally, the lack of 220V power supply at the identification site often makes use very inconvenient. Based on this, using modern electronic technology, a live cable identification instrument with a soft coil and LCD display has been developed. The host is designed to be powered by dry batteries, which can effectively solve the drawbacks of the above instruments and provide great assistance in practical work.

The wiring methods for the cable identification instrument are divided into two types: the direct connection method and the coupling method. The direct connection method is only suitable for identifying de-energized cables, while the coupling method can accurately identify both energized and de-energized cables.

Direct connection method: Disconnect the ground wire of the cable to be identified. Connect the signal current output line (red) to any good phase, and connect the other end of that phase to the ground. Connect the signal current return line (black) to the ground. Identification method: First determine the phase, based on the initial deflection of the meter pointer. According to the indicated direction, let the current flow through the receiving clamp in the indicated direction. If it is the cable to be identified, the initial deflection direction of the meter pointer should be to the right. During phase determination, if multiple cables have the same phase, amplitude comparison can be performed. Adjust the sensitivity knob to a suitable position and compare the amplitudes; the cable with the larger amplitude is the one to be identified.

Coupling method: Connect both ends of the cable to be identified to the ground (through the core wire, shield, or armor) to form a closed loop. When the direction of the output coupling clamp and the receiving coupling clamp are the same, the cable whose meter pointer deflects in the positive direction is the cable to be identified.
