A partial discharge detector is a professional instrument used to detect partial discharge phenomena inside power equipment. Partial Discharge (PD) refers to the localized discharge phenomenon caused by non-uniformity or defects in insulating materials of high-voltage components during operation. Although this phenomenon usually occurs in a very small area, it may be an early sign of insulation aging or defects. Therefore, partial discharge detection is crucial for assessing the health status of power equipment.
Working Principle
The working principle of a partial discharge detector is based on capturing and analyzing electromagnetic signals generated by partial discharges inside power equipment. When partial discharge occurs inside power equipment, high-frequency pulse currents are generated, which are coupled into the detection circuit through coupling capacitors (such as the distributed capacitance of the test object itself or externally added coupling capacitors). Next, these pulse signals are captured by the input unit, amplified by a low-noise preamplifier, then filtered by a filter amplifier to select the desired frequency band, and finally further amplified by the main amplifier to achieve the required amplitude, and zero-marker pulses are generated. The discharge pulses are displayed as visible pulses on the oscilloscope screen and simultaneously sent to the pulse peak meter to display their peak values.
To improve detection accuracy, a partial discharge detector also requires appropriate calibration. A common method is the comparison method, which involves injecting a certain amount of charge into both ends of the sample before the test, adjusting the amplification factor to establish a scale, and then comparing the partial discharge pulses received in the sample under actual voltage with the scale to obtain the apparent discharge charge of the sample.
Technical Features
Technical features of partial discharge detectors include
Multi-mode detection: In addition to the traditional high-frequency pulse current measurement method, modern partial discharge detectors may also support other detection modes, such as ultrasonic detection, optical detection, etc.
Portability: The handheld design makes the detector more convenient to carry and operate on site.
High sensitivity: Capable of capturing very weak partial discharge pulses, ensuring detection accuracy.
Intelligent analysis: Built-in software can automatically identify and analyze signals, assisting in determining the nature and location of partial discharges.
Visual display: Directly displays detection results on the screen, helping operators quickly understand the data.
Application Occasions
Partial discharge detectors are widely used in various equipment in the power system, including but not limited to:
High-voltage cables: Used to detect partial discharge conditions at cable terminations and intermediate joints.
Transformers: Detect partial discharges inside transformers and evaluate insulation status.
High-voltage switchgear: Used to detect partial discharge phenomena inside switchgear.
Gas-insulated switchgear (GIS): Monitor partial discharge activities inside GIS.
Motors and generators: Detect insulation problems in motors and generators.
Usage Steps
Preparation phase: Ensure the detector has sufficient battery and prepare the corresponding sensors.
Install sensors: Select appropriate sensors according to the detection object and install them on the detector.
Set parameters: Set relevant parameters of the detector as needed, such as frequency range, sensitivity, etc.
Start detection: Start the detector and place the sensor near or on the detection object.
Data analysis: Record detection data and analyze it through built-in software.
Report generation: Generate a detection report based on the analysis results and provide maintenance recommendations.
Conclusion
As an important tool for health diagnosis of power equipment, partial discharge detectors play a vital role in the maintenance and fault prediction of power systems. By regularly using partial discharge detectors for detection, the occurrence of power equipment failures can be effectively prevented, ensuring the stable operation of the power system.
