Selection Principles of Residual Current Devices

With the further development of China's economy and the continuous improvement of people's living standards, the domestic electricity consumption is increasing every year. With the growth of electricity consumption, the issue of electrical safety is becoming more and more severe. The residual current device (RCD) serves as a safeguard for the electrical safety of industrial enterprises and residential users. Therefore, the selection of RCDs is crucial. This article briefly describes how to select and install residual current devices.

To select a suitable residual current device, one must first understand its working principle. The basic circuit diagram is as follows:

The basic principle of the residual current device is based on Kirchhoff's law: ∑I=O. Under normal conditions, if the electrical equipment is a three-phase balanced load, the vector sum of the primary currents is zero, i.e., Iu+Iv+Iw=O; if the electrical equipment is a single-phase load, the vector sum of the primary currents is also zero, i.e., Iu+In=0, Iv+In=O, Iw+In=O. In the zero-sequence current transformer, the vector sum of the magnetic flux in the iron core of the current transformer TAN is also zero. There is no current output in the secondary winding of TAN, the trip device YA does not operate, and the RCD operates normally. When equipment leakage or personal electric shock occurs, the fault current Id flows through the earth back to the neutral point of the power supply transformer TM, forming a circuit. When the current reaches the set value, the trip device YA operates, the residual current device RCD trips, cutting off the faulty circuit, thereby providing protection.

The selection of residual current devices should be based on actual usage conditions.

In places with water such as bathrooms and swimming pools, the risk of electric shock is relatively high, so residual current devices with high sensitivity and fast response should be selected. In hotels, household appliances are usually pre-installed with residual current devices, so it is appropriate to choose RCDs with a residual operating current not greater than 30mA and fast operation. In general environments, choose a residual operating current not exceeding 30mA and an operating time not exceeding 0.1s. These two parameters ensure that if a person in our building gets an electric shock, it will not cause pathological physiological dangerous effects.

When selecting a residual current device, consideration should also be given to the unbalanced leakage current in the circuit. The installation location should take into account electromagnetic interference, so that the malfunction rate of the device is reduced.

Residual current devices are related to electrical safety. Therefore, when selecting them, it is necessary to be realistic and adapt to local conditions. Choose appropriate equipment according to different usage sites to achieve effective utilization of resources.
